Accessibility Overview
SEN Suitability
Big Thunder Mountain is a high-intensity roller coaster set in the fictional mining town of Thunder Mesa. Guests board a runaway mine train and race through tunnels, sharp turns, and outdoor mountain tracks.
- Noise Level: Very high, with coaster rumble, guest screams, and mining sound effects
- Visual Effects: Dark tunnels, sudden bursts of light, and occasional simulated explosions
- Movement: Speeds of up to 56 km/h (35 mph), sharp turns, sudden drops, and rapid direction changes. No inversions
- Storyline: Loosely based on the legend of a cursed gold mine, brought to life with rockwork, props, and themed sound effects
- SEN Tips: The combination of loud noise, darkness, and high speed can be overstimulating. Ear defenders and riding during quieter times are recommended for sensitive guests
Mobility Suitability
- Wheelchair Use: Not fully wheelchair-accessible, a transfer from a wheelchair into the ride vehicle is required
- Boarding:
- The ride vehicle is nearly level with the platform, but requires stepping over a small lip
- A transfer board and grab bar are available to assist guests with limited mobility
- Guests using the accessible entrance board from the exit side and are usually seated in the rear two carriages
- Storage: Wheelchairs and mobility aids are left with ride attendants and will be moved to the correct disembarkation point for retrieval after the ride
Priority & Easy Access Card Information
Guests with a Priority Card or Easy Access Card can use the accessible entrance, which is separate from the standard queue.
How to Access It:
- From the main Big Thunder Mountain entrance in Frontierland, locate the pathway between Big Thunder Photography and the Rustler Roundup Shootin’ Gallery, to the left of the main sign.
- Follow the path uphill, it is step-free with a slight incline and has some seating areas along the way.
- At the top, a Cast Member will direct you through the exit lane to the boarding area.
- Guests will board from the exit side of the platform into the rear carriages of the train.
Queue Conditions:
- Well-lit, spacious, and less crowded than the main queue
- Mostly outdoors with some shaded areas along the accessible path
Ride Experience
Big Thunder Mountain in Paris is unique, the coaster track is located on an island in the Rivers of the Far West.
- The train departs the station via a dark, fast-moving tunnel beneath the water before emerging onto the island’s mountain track
- Guests experience three main lift hills, each followed by rapid descents, sharp turns, and sudden changes in direction
- The ride alternates between outdoor sections with sweeping Frontierland views and indoor tunnels with themed mining effects
- The finale includes a dark tunnel with simulated explosions before returning to the station
Practical Tips
- Best Time to Ride: Early morning or during parades/fireworks when queues are shortest
- Closest Accessible Toilets: Next to Cowboy Cookout Barbecue in Frontierland
- Quiet Rest Area: Benches and shaded areas near Thunder Mesa Riverboat Landing
- Bag & Medical Equipment Storage: Small bags can be kept on the ride; larger items should be left with a non-rider or at the boarding area
